Rafael Navarro’s
work started in the late 60s as a way of escaping reality, as a therapy to
release the pressure form his responsibilities; photography was his last
resort. But it is not until the 70s when his first series were first published.
They were unusually modern for the time, and the way he interpreted the human
body gave them a new meaning. Ever since, his work has always expanded to new
directions, but, in some way or another, the nude, the skin of a woman’s body,
were the center of the creation. Now, more than 30 years later, his work is
still modern, not only in the way he approaches photography, but also in the
meanings given to each and every image produced.
Along his
extensive career, we can pin point several stages:
DIPTYCHS (1978-1985): From 1978 to 1985, he concentrated in a very special work: The Diptychs. A group of images composed by 69 final images each of them made of two 13x18 cms. large format negatives, printed onto the same paper. Some critics had said that they are one of the most incredible groups of images ever produced by a Spanish photographer. They are, probably, some of the best-known photographs of this author. It is undoubtedly, the most innovative work of his career: on one hand we find pairs of images that at times, are quite contrary and that we find side by side with another image almost inexplicably, but for the relations invented by the author along the production of the piece. On the other hand, sought or found images, found or sought thoughts in strange vicinity. They transmit the sensation that they have always been there, that there are no reasons to believe that their physical nearness is not forced.
